A parasite outbreak has affected over 1,400 people, primarily in Michigan and Ohio. The parasite, cyclospora, can cause diarrhea, cramping, and bloating. The outbreak has also been reported in other states, including New York, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, and Texas.
How to Stay Safe
To avoid getting sick, it is essential to take extra care when preparing produce and swimming in public areas. Cyclospora can be found in contaminated water and food, particularly fresh fruits and vegetables. Cooking food to an internal temperature of 158 degrees Fahrenheit or higher can kill the parasite.
Washing produce thoroughly, especially salad greens, can also help prevent infection. A rinse of one part vinegar to three parts water can remove most cyclospora spores from produce. However, even careful washing may not remove all spores, so it is crucial to be vigilant.
If you experience diarrhea for longer than 48 hours, it is recommended to visit a doctor for a diagnosis and treatment. Standard tests may not include cyclospora, so your doctor may need to special order it.
