A 33-year-old Chinese national, Jiaying Chen, is scheduled to enter a guilty plea in a Las Vegas courtroom for charges of bigamy and obtaining money under false pretenses in excess of $100,000. According to Nevada prosecutors, Chen targeted over a dozen men between 2019 and 2024, applying for 14 marriage licenses and ultimately processing seven completed marriage certificates.
Marriage Scam
Chen would connect with men on social media and dating applications, quickly suggesting marriage and then requesting large sums of cash, claiming the money was needed to care for sick family members in China. Once the funds were transferred, Chen would break off contact or file for an annulment. Financial records show individual victims lost amounts including $40,000, $23,000, and $20,000.
Police recovered a U.S. passport and a Nevada driver’s license featuring Chen’s photograph but bearing the name “Vicky Liang.” State DMV records showed no matching registration for that name, but a county search revealed the alias was used to submit eight different marriage applications, mostly between April and June of this year.
Chen remains booked at the Clark County Correctional Center on a $100,000 bond ahead of her formal plea hearing.
