Meta, a tech giant, has announced the construction of a massive data center in central Alberta, Canada. This investment, valued at $9.17 billion, marks Meta’s first data center in Canada and its 33rd globally.
Details of the Investment
The 1-gigawatt data center, located in Sturgeon County, will be fully funded by Meta, including new generation and grid infrastructure. The project has partnered with Alberta-based Pembina Pipeline, which will provide a natural gas-fired power-generation facility to support the data center’s significant energy needs.
The data center is expected to consume as much electricity as 800,000 homes, making it a substantial addition to Alberta’s energy grid. The provincial government has given new proponents the option to build their own power sources to avoid limits on power capacity.
Alberta’s cold climate and abundance of natural gas make it an attractive location for Meta’s data center. The province’s energy grid, which is 60% powered by natural gas, will support the data center’s operations.
