International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will visit Argentina at the end of July, IMF spokesman Pierre Mejlak said on Wednesday. The visit will mark Georgieva’s first visit to the South American country in her current role, although she has held numerous meetings with Argentine officials elsewhere.
Georgieva will meet with Argentine President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo during the short visit. Caputo said on Monday the government expects to meet debt payments through 2027 with multilateral loans, privatizations and local bond issuance, while avoiding a return to international bond markets for now.
Argentina faces a foreign-currency debt test in 2027, with over $23 billion in foreign-currency principal payments due, or more than $32 billion including interest, according to IMF data. The IMF is forecasting Argentina’s gross domestic product growth will drop to 3.5% in 2026 from 4.4% last year, before rebounding to 4% in 2027.
