Houston had plenty to cheer about this week, starting with a record-breaking Fourth of July celebration. Freedom Over Texas drew its largest crowd ever, and Mayor John Whitmire praised the city for a successful America 250 commemoration — marking the nation’s 250th anniversary in style along the Houston skyline.
The milestone turnout was a testament to the community spirit that makes Houston one of the country’s great cities, with families and neighbors coming together to celebrate American history in a big, Houston-sized way.
The good news didn’t stop there. The YMCA of Greater Houston, in partnership with Reliant, is bringing lifesaving swim skills to 320 underserved children this summer. The program targets kids who might otherwise never have access to formal swim instruction — an especially important initiative in a Gulf Coast city where water safety can be a matter of life and death.
Together, the two stories paint a picture of a city that knows how to celebrate and knows how to look out for its youngest and most vulnerable residents — a Houston worth cheering for all summer long.
