A landslide in China’s western province of Gansu has resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people, according to state news agency Xinhua. The landslide occurred early on Tuesday morning in a valley in Tanchang county, trapping 33 people. Most of those affected were residents from nearby villages who were hired as temporary laborers at a state-run forestry farm in the valley.
The mountainous region is prone to natural disasters, including flash floods and landslides, especially during the rainy season. The search and rescue operations have ended, and the exact cause of the landslide is not yet known.
