Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed his support for candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), stating that the Democratic Party needs to be in the ‘addition business’ to regain the majority.
Newsom’s Comments
Newsom made these comments during a livestream on his YouTube channel, where he rejected the idea that socialist candidates are a threat to the party. He related this to his own experience facing ‘purity tests’ while running for mayor of San Francisco in 2003.
Newsom’s comments echoed those of other Democratic Party members who have welcomed socialist candidates into their ‘big tent’. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., have also expressed support for DSA-backed candidates.
Response from Other Democrats
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., warned her Democratic colleagues against discouraging socialist candidates, saying that they should not decide who these candidates are before meeting them.
