Eugene’s legendary Hayward Field once again lived up to its reputation as one of the world’s premier track and field venues this weekend, hosting the 2026 Wanda Diamond League Prefontaine Classic on July 4th weekend.
Olympic champions took center stage, with Canadian hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg delivering a standout performance — launching a world-leading throw of 83.33 meters to claim victory in the hammer event. Fellow Olympic champion Sion also impressed fans in the field events, adding to an already electric atmosphere at the storied Eugene stadium.
The Prefontaine Classic, a fixture on the global athletics calendar, draws the sport’s biggest names to Eugene each year, celebrating the legacy of University of Oregon running legend Steve Prefontaine. This year’s edition continued that proud tradition, giving local fans a front-row seat to some of the best track and field competition on the planet.
With warm, sunny weather in the forecast for the holiday weekend, conditions were ideal for athletes and spectators alike. Eugene’s identity as “Track Town USA” was on full display as the city welcomed the world to Hayward Field once more.
