Oklahoma is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with a year-long series of events that highlight history, community service, and plans for the future. The state’s Oklahoma 250 celebration ties the nation’s milestone to another iconic event: Route 66 turning 100. Leaders say both commemorate the American journey.
Oklahoma City National Memorial
At the Oklahoma City National Memorial, people are sharing stories about what America means today. These conversations will be preserved in the National Archives, alongside new American flags honoring victims ahead of Independence Day.
The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is also focusing on how the American West shaped the nation’s identity. Western history is American history, and the story of the American West is the story of America, the story of opportunity and expansion.
Community Service
Oklahoma’s celebration also emphasizes service. In June, 40,000 pounds of food were donated to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, providing roughly 30,000 meals. This is part of a nationwide America 250 effort built around community service instead of celebration alone.
The state is also looking ahead, preserving its legacy for future generations. Seven items, including a Thunder championship pin, a Route 66 commemorative coin, a First Americans Museum keepsake, an Oklahoma National Guard challenge coin, and a photo from the Thunder championship parade, are headed for the America250 national time capsule.
