SMSD Student Chamber Connects Students to Local Entrepreneurs

The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) student chamber of commerce recently connected students with local entrepreneurs at Oak Park Mall. The event provided students with the opportunity to learn about various aspects of business, including business law, contracts, and negotiation.

Real World Learning

The SMSD Student Chamber of Commerce aims to empower student entrepreneurs and young business enthusiasts to thrive, collaborate, and innovate. The organization’s mission is to provide students with real-world learning experiences that prepare them for college and careers.

During the event, students visited multiple stations and engaged in conversations with professionals to discuss various topics. Clarence Taylor, owner of Chick-fil-A, talked to students about handling business expenses. Students also learned about the importance of being professional, collaborating with other business owners, and gaining mentors.

The event was a big win for the Overland Park Chamber in terms of supporting young entrepreneurs and the community. Andrew Weisberg, director of talent at the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, noted that the event allowed students to hone in on important skills like communication, executive, and critical thinking.

The Shawnee Mission School District serves students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in 34 elementary schools, five middle schools, five high schools, and several educational centers. The district’s objective is to provide each student with a personalized learning plan that prepares them for college and careers, with the interpersonal skills they need for life success.
