Local hip-hop artist Avery Thee Chef, formerly known as Shyland Flowers, has released a new album titled “There Is a Northstar” after a six-year hiatus. The album marks a return to form for the Upstate Music Award-winning MC, showcasing his powerful and agile delivery.
Personal Struggles and Musical Growth
Avery Thee Chef’s period of transition included a name change, personal struggles, and a renewed focus on his music. He stated that his writing, beats, and delivery have matured over the past five years, with a newfound commitment to writing daily.
The album kicks off with the grinding, rubbery “For the Lonelies,” which includes a lovely female-voiced chorus hook. Other notable tracks include “Harlem,” “Carolina Baby,” and the sunlit melodic ballad “Nick + Nicole,” which pays tribute to the Upstate music scene.
