A fuel crisis in Russia, caused by escalating Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, has led to a surge in demand for electric vehicles. Despite Russia’s limited charging network and harsh climate, motorists are turning to electric cars as a way to sidestep the fuel shortages and soaring prices.
Rising Demand for Electric Vehicles
EN Cars, a Moscow-based dealership specializing in Chinese brands, is selling two to three electric vehicles per day, compared to just two to three per month a few weeks ago. The company’s founder, Yevgeniy Zabelin, attributes the increase in demand to the fuel crisis, saying that interest is rising in both budget and premium models.
According to analytical agency Autostat and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, sales of new plug-in hybrids in Russia rose 125% year-on-year in the first five months of the year, while sales of new fully electric cars increased 19%. The number of charging stations in Russia also increased by 20% in the year to July 2026, according to digital map service 2GIS.
