Monaco, a country known for its high level of safety and security, was shaken by a bomb explosion on Monday night. The blast occurred at the entrance of a fancy apartment building, seriously injuring Ukrainian-born oligarch Vadym Yermolaiev, 58, a woman, and a 13-year-old child.
Investigation Underway
Prince Albert II, Monaco’s head of state, described the bombing as an ‘odious act’ and mobilized the country’s police officers and security services to hunt for the attacker. The police have launched an investigation into ‘attempted premeditated murder and placing an explosive device in a public area.’
Christophe Mirmand, Monaco’s minister of state, stated that this was the first time such an act had taken place in the principality. CCTV footage showed the suspect walking around the area several times before the explosion.
A Safe Haven No More
Monaco prides itself on its high level of safety and security, with no homicides or attempted murders last year. The country has a large police force, with 556 officers patrolling an area of just 485 acres. This translates to one police officer for every 70 residents.
The government is now increasing security measures, including a network of 1,387 CCTV and facial recognition cameras. Random on-the-spot identity checks are also regularly carried out.
The bombing has raised concerns about the country’s safety, particularly among its wealthy residents. Many have chosen to live in Monaco due to its tax structures and high level of security.
