France forward Kylian Mbappé scored his 17th and 18th career World Cup goals in France’s 3-0 rout of Sweden on Tuesday, moving one back of Lionel Messi’s record of 19.
Mbappé’s Performance
Mbappé’s goals came in the 45th and 74th minutes, with the first being a highlight-reel goal that showcased his speed and agility. He engaged in a give-and-go with Ousmane Dembélé, crossed over Viktor Gyökeres, and fired his shot past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.
Sweden coach Graham Potter praised Mbappé, saying, ‘It goes without saying that Mapp is an absolute top, top player. His goal was a fine example of the speed and the change of direction and the way he can get the shot off quick. It’s an incredibly high level.’
Mbappé’s performance was all the more impressive given the hot and humid conditions, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the game.
