The Supreme Court has upheld the principle that most people born in the United States are citizens, rejecting a challenge to birthright citizenship by the Trump administration.
Local Reaction
Immigrant groups in Chicago have welcomed the decision, saying it is a victory for civil and constitutional rights. Eréndira Rendón, vice president of immigrant justice for The Resurrection Project, said the ruling upholds a “very explicit” protection in the Constitution that should never have been questioned.
For Erika, a Chicago immigrant mother of two American daughters, the decision means her children will have equal access to opportunities in the country they were born in. Erika, who is an illegal immigrant, said she always tells her daughters they are American, despite their parents’ immigration status.
Local officials, including Ald. Julia Ramirez, have also applauded the ruling, saying it ensures immigrant children can stay in the country they know and have equal rights.
