A Democrat Senator from Arizona, Ruben Gallego, is facing a Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation for potential violations of campaign finance laws. The probe was confirmed by a source familiar with the investigation.
Allegations of Misuse of Campaign Funds
According to reports, Gallego allegedly used campaign donations to fund lavish vacations with his family, including trips to Miami, Saint Barthélemy, Disneyland, Disney World, and Chicago. He also used campaign funds to attend the 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona, which he claimed was a legitimate campaign fundraising expense.
The senator also used $18,000 in funds from his leadership PAC to reimburse himself for childcare costs. Gallego has defended his actions, stating that the costs of childcare are a burden on American families and that he is permitted to travel with his family as allowed by the FEC.
Despite being cleared by the Senate Ethics Committee, the DOJ investigation was revealed less than a day later. Gallego’s office has been reached out to for comment.
