Serena Williams returns to singles action at Wimbledon for the first time in four years. The seven-time Wimbledon singles winner last won the tournament in 2016. One person not surprised by her decision to come out of retirement is her childhood coach, Rick Macci.
Coach’s Insights
Macci, who was portrayed in the Hollywood movie “King Richard,” coached the Williams sisters from 1991-1995. “It doesn’t surprise me whatsoever. She’s wired very differently. She’s the ultimate competitor. She didn’t really want to retire when she did four years ago. Her kids are older now, and she wants them to see what Mommy did for a living,” Macci said in between giving lessons at his Rick Macci Tennis Center in Boca Raton.
As someone who spent hours upon hours with Serena grinding on the court, what does Macci expect from Williams on Tuesday? “She has nothing to prove, but when it’s all said and done, she is in this thing to win; she’s not doing it for a cameo, not for any other reason,” he said.
