A new program is adding artwork to DART bus shelters to enhance rider experience and make public transportation more visible. The Art Shelter Program is adding pops of color along its route.
A ribbon-cutting was held for six new art shelters along Ingersoll Avenue. By the end of the year, 40 brightly colored shelters will be added to main roads on routes.
DART said shelters make waiting for a bus safer and more comfortable and adding art to the shelters makes them more visible on busy roads. DART Central Station is home to three permanent public art installations.
Bravo Greater Des Moines provided a grant to fund the art for the shelters. The shelters are built using DART’s capital budget, which is different than the budget used to operate services.
Each art shelter features work by an artist selected with input from local stakeholders and community partners.
