Film photography is experiencing a resurgence, thanks to Gen Z. In 2025, 35% of the 42 million active film camera users worldwide were between the ages of 18 and 30. Disposable camera sales have been steadily increasing since 2023, and online searches for analog photography saw a 41% rise in 2024.
A Response to Digital Culture
Young people are rejecting algorithms and the alienation of social media, seeking a more authentic way to connect with the world. Analog photography offers a sense of community and creative expression, allowing individuals to produce physical, tangible objects.
The attraction of analog photography is also driven by a desire for what sociologists call a “third place” – a space separate from home and work where people can gather, socialize, and engage in creative activities. This can include local cafes, writing groups, or photography clubs.
In April 2026, the inaugural AnalogCon took place in Los Angeles, showcasing the best of analog photography. The event featured exhibitions, panels, demonstrations, and guided photography tours, attracting vendors, industry leaders, artists, and teachers.
