Rome’s municipality has introduced a €400-million support scheme for the elderly, which includes an electronic bracelet that monitors their heart rate, sleep patterns, and allows them to call for help in an emergency.
Smart Technology for Elderly Care
The device is part of a larger effort to provide support and care for the elderly, particularly during the ongoing heatwave in Europe. The bracelet is worn like a watch and includes motion sensors that can detect accidental falls while constantly tracking the wearer’s movements.
A team of social workers is keeping tabs on the elderly remotely, through the electronic bracelet, and is available to provide assistance and support as needed. The social workers also make daily calls to check in on the elderly and provide a friendly ear if they feel bored or lonely.
The scheme has been successful, with two emergencies already resolved through the use of the bracelet. The municipality hopes to expand the program and provide support to more elderly citizens in the future.
