The median age of the U.S. population continues to rise, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. As of July 1, 2025, the median age was estimated to be 39.4 years old, an increase from 39.2 the prior year. This trend has been consistent since at least 2020.
Median Age Changes Across the Country
More than two-thirds of metropolitan and micropolitan areas experienced an increase in median age from 2020 to 2025, aligning with the national trend. Only 251 out of the 927 metro and micro areas saw a decline in median age. The areas with the youngest median ages were often locations with universities, while the oldest median age was found in Wildwood-The Villages, Florida, which has an age restriction of 55 or older.
