The Museum of Science and Industry in Jackson Park is set to undergo a major renovation. The $22 million project will restore the building’s original south portico and add a wheelchair accessible entrance and an indoor café with a terrace overlooking the park.
Restoring the Original Entrance
The museum’s president and CEO, Dr. Chevy Humphrey, stated that the project will allow visitors to experience the museum’s original main entry for the first time in over a century. The renovation will also help connect the museum to the Obama Presidential Center campus and the rest of Jackson Park.
The project was made possible by a $10 million grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. The museum will remain open to the public throughout the renovations, which are set to finish in the fall of 2027.
The museum’s new café will be available to host private events and will also be accessible to the public without a ticket to the museum. This is part of the museum’s long-term goal to create more opportunities for the public to experience the museum for free or at a reduced cost.
