An 8-year-old boy, Seamus Coffey, caught a piranha while fishing with his dad, Michael, at Ridley Park Lake in Pennsylvania. Seamus was using a string and a hot dog as bait when he felt a tug on his line.
At first, Seamus thought he had caught a bass, but as he reeled it in, his dad realized it was something unusual. After consulting Google images, they determined it was a red-bellied piranha, a native South American fish.
According to officials with Pennsylvania’s Fish and Boat Commission, the piranha was likely someone’s pet that was released into the lake. The commission believes this is an isolated incident.
Seamus and his dad initially put the piranha back in the lake but then decided to remove it to protect the ecosystem. They estimated the piranha to be about 9 1/2 inches in length and weighing about 2 pounds.
