A brush fire in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles briefly closed part of the 5 Freeway on Wednesday. The fire was reported on an embankment near the 14 and 5 freeways north of Los Angeles. The northbound 5 Freeway was closed for the fire response.
Details about how the fire started were not immediately available. Water-dropping aircraft, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s tandem-rotor Boeing CH-47 Chinook, were dispatched to the fire.
The freeway reopened at about 10:30 a.m. Hot and dry conditions, which can increase the risk of fire danger, are in the forecast this week in Southern California. The peak of the heat is expected Wednesday and Thursday with heat advisories in effect through the end of the week for some areas.
