Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, has taken responsibility for a car accident that occurred on July 14 in Palo Alto. Shanahan met with reporters to give his side of the story after initial reports incorrectly blamed the other driver.

Accident Details

According to Shanahan, he was driving at 20 miles per hour when he dropped his phone and took his eyes off the road to look for it. This distraction caused his car to veer into the other vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision. Shanahan suffered a concussion, a broken left hand, nose, and three ribs, and required over 40 stitches to his face.

The woman in the other vehicle was not harmed. A Palo Alto police spokesperson confirmed that Shanahan was at fault for the collision, citing a clerical error in the initial report that incorrectly blamed the other driver.

Coach’s Condition

Shanahan is currently recovering from his injuries and is not yet healthy enough to participate in full team activities. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is handling Shanahan’s duties in the meantime.
