York was arrested in Ohio as part of a prostitution sting and later entered a no‑contest plea to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and possession of criminal tools. Shanahan said the case has “no effect on us” from a football standpoint.
Coach focuses on football, not off‑field drama
When asked whether the owner’s arrest could affect the team, Shanahan responded, “My view as the coach is, does it have effect on us as a team? And that’s what I continue to answer from a football standpoint. It has no effect on us. It hasn’t been mentioned in a meeting today. It doesn’t have to do with what happens on the field.”
The coach also referenced his own recent head‑on collision in July, which limited his on‑field presence early in training camp. “I don’t think that or York’s legal trouble will distract the football team in the upcoming season,” Shanahan said. “It’s been training camp as usual.”
Respect for York and his family remains
Despite the controversy, Shanahan said he still holds respect for York and his wife, Danielle Belluomini. “I have a lot of respect for Jed. I have a lot of respect for Danielle. Their family means a lot to me,” he said, adding that he has spoken with York over the past two days. Shanahan noted that the situation is “very personal” and he is trying to keep it that way.
The coach acknowledged the broader context, noting that NFL owners will meet soon to discuss the Seattle Seahawks sale and that the league is aware of York’s situation under its Personal Conduct Policy. While disciplinary action could theoretically affect the franchise, Shanahan stressed that it is not a current concern for the team or its players.
Players accustomed to media scrutiny
Shanahan pointed out that 49ers players are used to constant cameras and media attention. “They deal with it their whole careers,” he said. “I feel something like this is actually easier for them than some of the stuff they have to deal with on the field.”
