The Department of Homeland Security announced the addition of 43 companies to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List, marking the largest single expansion of the list since the law took effect. The entities were added due to their involvement in forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Background
The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act was enacted in December 2021 to prevent the importation of goods produced with forced labor in the Xinjiang region. The law requires US Customs and Border Protection to apply a rebuttable presumption that goods produced by listed entities are barred from entering the United States.
The 43 newly listed companies operate in sectors such as aluminum, apparel, copper, cotton, and tomatoes, and will be subject to the rebuttable presumption starting August 3. The Department of Homeland Security has denied entry to over 24,300 shipments valued at nearly $1 billion since the law was enacted.
