27-Year-Old Swimmer Identified After Fatal Incident in Cannon River Near Cannon Falls

Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office officials announced Friday evening that the man recovered from the Cannon River has been identified as 27‑year‑old Logan Alway of Cannon Falls. The tragic incident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. when a 911 call reported a person in distress in the river.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

First‑responders arrived quickly and located Alway’s body in the water. Two friends who were swimming with him immediately entered the river to search for him after he vanished beneath the surface. According to the sheriff’s news release, Alway resurfaced twice before submerging a third time and never returned to the surface.

Rescue crews recovered the body and, by 7:00 p.m., notified Alway’s family of the recovery. The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed his identity.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death, and the medical examiner’s full report is pending. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the investigation remains active and that any additional information will be shared with the public as it becomes available.

Local officials reminded residents to exercise caution when swimming in the Cannon River, especially during periods of higher flow or colder water temperatures. The river, while a popular recreation spot, can present hidden hazards such as strong currents and sudden drop‑offs.

Community Response

Friends, family, and neighbors gathered later Friday to pay respects to Alway, describing him as a beloved son, brother, and friend. Community members expressed sorrow while also offering prayers for his family, reflecting the strong faith‑centered values that bind the Cannon Falls area.

“We are grieving the loss of a young man who meant so much to his family and our town,” said a local pastor who led a brief prayer service at the river’s edge. “May God grant comfort to those who mourn and keep our waters safe for all who enjoy them.”

Safety Recommendations

Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office and local emergency services urge swimmers to follow these safety tips:

  • Never swim alone; always have a companion.
  • Wear a life jacket or personal flotation device, especially in fast‑moving water.
  • Be aware of changing water conditions and avoid swimming after heavy rain.
  • Stay within designated swimming areas and heed any posted warnings.

Residents are encouraged to report any unsafe conditions to the sheriff’s office promptly.

Looking Ahead

While the community mourns this loss, officials hope the tragedy will serve as a reminder of the importance of water safety. The sheriff’s office will continue to monitor the river and work with local organizations to promote safe recreation.
