Lincoln Police Department officers were dispatched around 8:15 p.m. on Nov. 2 after multiple calls reported a disturbance near South 19th and Washington streets. Callers said a physical altercation had broken out between a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-old man, and that the confrontation involved a large kitchen knife and a garden rake.
When officers arrived at Russ’s Market, they observed the teenager brandishing the knife and lunging toward an unidentified 69-year-old man who was attempting to intervene with a shopping cart. The 53-year-old man was holding a garden rake at the time.
Police Intervention
The teen complied with officers’ commands to drop the knife. In a surprising turn, the 53-year-old man then picked up the knife, prompting officers to order him to relinquish it as well. After a brief investigation, detectives concluded that the teenager had initially threatened the adult with the garden rake, seized the opportunity to take the knife, and continued to threaten the man both at his residence and inside the store.
Both the rake and the knife were recovered at the scene. The 14-year-old was placed under arrest and transported to the Youth Services Center, where he faces a charge of second-degree attempted assault.
Community Impact
Incidents involving youth violence raise concerns for parents, educators, and community leaders. While the swift response by Lincoln officers prevented further escalation, the episode underscores the importance of early intervention programs and parental guidance to steer teenagers away from dangerous behavior.
Local officials have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety in Lincoln’s commercial districts. The police department encourages residents to report suspicious activity promptly and to cooperate fully with investigators.
Legal Process
The teenager’s case will proceed through the juvenile justice system, which emphasizes rehabilitation alongside accountability. Authorities hope that appropriate counseling and community support will help the young person avoid future confrontations.
Residents are reminded that the Lincoln Police Department remains vigilant in protecting neighborhoods and businesses. Anyone with information about similar incidents is urged to contact the department’s non-emergency line.
