Zuni Street Brewing’s Sunnyside Taproom Might Be Denver’s Most Relaxed Afternoon

There’s a certain kind of afternoon that Denver does better than almost anywhere else — one where the sun is warm but not punishing, the beer is cold and thoughtfully made, and nobody seems to be in any particular hurry. You’ll find that afternoon waiting for you at Zuni Street Brewing Company, tucked into the Sunnyside neighborhood just northwest of downtown, where the city feels a little quieter and a lot more like itself.

Sunnyside is one of those Denver neighborhoods that hasn’t fully tipped into trend-piece territory yet, which is precisely what makes it worth seeking out. Drive or bike up Zuni Street past bungalows with overgrown sunflowers in the front yards and the occasional hand-painted mural, and you’ll find the brewery right where it belongs: unpretentious, welcoming, and doing something genuinely good with hops and malt.

Zuni Street opened in 2016, and the team behind it clearly set out to make a neighborhood brewery in the truest sense — a place where the regulars know each other and first-timers get treated like regulars anyway. The taproom itself has the easy warmth of somewhere that didn’t hire a design firm to manufacture a vibe. There are long communal tables, big windows, and a patio out back that becomes the center of the universe on any decent weather day. Dogs are welcome. Kids are welcome. Conversations happen between strangers without anyone trying too hard.

The beer is the real reason to make the trip, though. Head brewer Tyler Peebler and the team rotate through a lineup that rewards curiosity. You might find a crisp Czech-style pilsner sitting next to a roasty oatmeal stout and a dry-hopped pale ale that tastes like Colorado in a glass. The seasonal offerings — a peach wheat in summer, a warming amber as the mountains start to go golden — show genuine care for the rhythms of the place. If you’re the kind of person who gets excited by a well-executed lager, Zuni Street will make your day. If you came for the hazy IPAs, they’ve got that covered too.

The food situation has evolved nicely over the years. The kitchen turns out pub-style bites — sandwiches, loaded nachos, soft pretzels with beer-cheese dipping sauce — that are honest and satisfying without being fussy. This is not the place to photograph your meal for anyone’s benefit. This is the place to eat your food while it’s hot and immediately order another pint.

What stays with you after a visit to Zuni Street is harder to name than the beer or the pretzels. It’s something about the pace of the place — the way a Saturday afternoon can stretch out pleasantly into evening without anyone noticing. Denver has plenty of ambitious food and drink destinations, and they’re worth your time. But Zuni Street Brewing is worth your time in a completely different way: it reminds you that the best version of a city often lives in its neighborhoods, not its headlines.

Get there by bike if you can — the area is flat and the ride through Sunnyside is lovely. Arrive without a reservation, find a spot at the bar or on the patio, and let the afternoon do what it does best. You’ll understand within the first sip why the regulars keep coming back.
