The 102nd Burning of Zozobra, themed ‘America 250,’ will celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary with colonial-inspired costumes and festivities at Fort Marcy Park. Zozobra will wear King George’s attire, while the Gloomies will dress as redcoats and the torchbearers as patriots. Attendees are encouraged to join the fun by dressing up in colonial outfits.
Creating Your Own Colonial Attire
The women who sew Zozobra together every summer are sharing tips on how to create your own colonial attire. Using basic materials, simple sewing techniques, and items you may already have at home, attendees can craft their own costumes.
Christian Porter is already preparing for the event. ‘This is how they dressed back then,’ Porter said. Jodi McGinnis created a colonial outfit for her son using thrift store finds. ‘Everything here you can find at your local thrift store and just put it together and upcycle it,’ McGinnis said.
Small details can come from everyday items. For those who prefer simpler projects, accessories like a tri-corner hat or a traditional women’s cap can be made with minimal effort.
