Zinedine Zidane, a World Cup winner, has been named the new head coach of France’s men’s national team. The French Football Federation (FFF) made the announcement on Tuesday.

Zidane will take over from longtime head coach Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after the 2026 World Cup. The 54-year-old Zidane will be counted on to lift the organization’s spirits after the national team was eliminated from the tournament by Spain in the semifinals.
Zidane has a wealth of experience as a player and coach. He won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and has coached Real Madrid to numerous titles, including three consecutive Champions League titles.
Expectations
The expectation will be for Zidane to lead France to another World Cup title in 2030. He will have to figure out a way to find harmony among his forward options, including star man Kylian Mbappé.
Zidane said in a press release, ‘I have often said there is nothing greater than the French national team. It is therefore a joy and obviously a great honor to become the coach of France.’ He also expressed his gratitude to the French Football Federation for their trust and saluted the fourteen years of service by his predecessor, Didier Deschamps.
