Downtown Yukon is set to come alive next weekend as the city marks the 60th anniversary of its beloved Czech Fest. The multi‑day celebration honors the deep Czech heritage that helped shape the community and promises a weekend of games, food, live performances and a parade.
Heritage and community pride
“Yukon has such a rich, deep Czech heritage with our settlements, and a lot of our community has been built on Czech immigrants and founders,” said Alanna Bradley, publicity chair of Oklahoma Czechs, Inc. “We love sharing that with the community because we still have connections and we still celebrate where we came from.”
The festival began in 1966 to commemorate Yukon’s 75th anniversary and has grown each year since. This year’s event also coincides with the Route 66 centennial, giving organizers a chance to “check our roots on Route 66,” Bradley added.
Schedule and attractions
The Czech Fest kicks off Friday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m., and continues Saturday from 8 a.m. The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend.
Visitors can enjoy a beer garden, a carnival, hundreds of vendors, and a wide selection of Czech foods. “These are kolaches; they are a Czech food, and my personal favorite is the cream cheese,” said Lucy Kastl, the reigning Czech princess, who also shared her excitement about the celebration.
Live music, dance performances and family‑friendly games will be scattered throughout downtown, providing a taste of the Czech Republic right in Yukon. Admission is free for the whole family.
Why the festival matters
Beyond the fun, the festival serves as a reminder of the contributions Czech immigrants made to the development of Yukon and the surrounding region. It offers an opportunity for younger generations to learn about their cultural roots while enjoying a festive atmosphere.
“Here we are at 60 years. Who would’ve known that we would still be doing this and celebrating our heritage?” Bradley reflected.
