York County schedules required pink postcard meeting for Heartland schools

York County, Neb., is holding a “pink postcard” meeting tonight to address the property‑tax request that Heartland Community Schools plans to submit. The meeting is a statutory requirement under Nebraska law whenever a local government or school district intends to ask for a tax increase that exceeds the state’s allowable growth limit.

What the pink postcard means

The “pink postcard” is a notice sent to property owners informing them that a local entity is seeking a tax levy above the growth cap. The notice triggers a public‑hearing process, giving residents a chance to learn about the proposed increase and to voice concerns before the request moves forward.

County officials’ role

York County Commissioner Randy Obermier explained that while department heads and elected officials are not obligated to attend, he strongly encouraged their presence. “We want all relevant parties informed and ready to answer questions from the community,” Obermier said.

The meeting will be open to the public, allowing property owners and other interested parties to hear details about the proposed tax request, the reasons behind it, and how the additional revenue would be used by Heartland Community Schools.

Why the meeting matters for families

For families in the Heartland School district, the outcome of the pink postcard process could affect school funding, classroom resources, and extracurricular programs. By participating in the meeting, residents can gain a clearer picture of how any additional tax dollars would be allocated and ensure that the district remains accountable to the community.

Next steps

After the meeting, the county will follow the state‑mandated timeline for the pink postcard process, which includes publishing the notice, holding a public hearing, and ultimately deciding whether to approve the tax request. Property owners who receive the pink postcard will have the opportunity to submit written comments or appear at the hearing to express support or opposition.

Commissioner Obermier reiterated the importance of transparency: “Our goal is to keep taxpayers informed and involved. This process gives them a voice before any tax increase is finalized.”

Residents with questions about the meeting or the pink postcard process are encouraged to contact the York County Treasurer’s Office.
