The American Parents Coalition (APC) is urging the YMCA to revise its policies governing sports, bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations following the Supreme Court’s recent Title IX rulings. The coalition argues that the YMCA’s current policies conflict with the Supreme Court’s interpretation of Title IX, which protects the rights of women and girls based on biological sex.
Supreme Court Rulings
The Supreme Court ruled that states can limit women’s and girls’ sports to biological females and that Title IX’s use of the word ‘sex’ refers to biological sex. The APC is calling on the YMCA to rescind policies allowing biological males to participate in female sports or access female-only bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations.
The YMCA operates about 2,600 locations nationwide and receives more than $600 million annually in government funding. The APC argues that the YMCA’s policies undermine the privacy, safety, and fairness that Title IX was enacted to protect.
Response from the YMCA
The YMCA did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the APC’s allegations or whether it plans to review its policies following the Supreme Court’s decisions.
