Yellowstone’s Dunraven Pass Opens, Completing Summer Road Access

Yellowstone National Park has announced the opening of Dunraven Pass, the scenic route connecting Canyon Village and Tower Fall, marking the full accessibility of all park roads for the summer season. This development is significant for visitors planning trips to the park, as it allows for uninterrupted travel across Yellowstone’s vast landscapes.

Access and Safety Considerations

While the South Entrance, which is the closest for residents of Jackson, opened earlier on May 8, the full opening of park roads is a welcome update for those planning Memorial Day weekend visits. However, park officials caution that temporary closures may occur due to unpredictable spring weather conditions. Visitors are encouraged to check the Yellowstone park roads website for the latest updates.

In addition to road conditions, the opening of Beartooth Highway (US212) has been delayed due to snow, with a tentative opening scheduled for May 23. Typically, this highway opens in time for the Memorial Day weekend, but current weather conditions have necessitated a delay. Travelers should also verify the status of Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (WY296) through the Wyoming Department of Transportation before embarking on their journey.

Wildlife Awareness

Spring is a dynamic time for wildlife in Yellowstone, with animals such as bison, elk, and bears frequently using roads to navigate the park. Visitors are reminded to maintain a safe distance of at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from all other wildlife. Carrying bear spray and understanding its use is strongly advised to ensure safety during encounters with wildlife.

As the park transitions into its summer operations, services remain limited. Visitors should consult the park’s operating dates site for detailed information on available amenities and plan accordingly.
