A substantial thermal explosion has been reported at Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin, a collection of thermal pools and geysers. The explosion, which occurred on June 13, ripped a 20-foot hole in the ground and shot scalding water 30 feet into the air.
Temporary Closure
The area has been temporarily closed to traffic to assess the damage and investigate the new pool that has formed as a result. This is the third time in 24 months that a thermal explosion has been reported in the area. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
Tens of thousands of tourists are expected to visit the park this weekend, and park staff will be closely monitoring the Biscuit Basin area. Entrance to all national parks will be free over the Fourth of July weekend.
