Yellowstone National Park recently announced that it is lifting fishing restrictions on rivers and streams that went into effect on July 29. The restrictions were implemented due to low water flows and high water temperatures that can be lethal to fish.
Anglers may now fish on most park rivers, streams, and lakes daily from sunrise to sunset, as specified in the 2026 Fishing Regulations booklet. However, existing full fishing closures on the Madison, Firehole, and Gibbon rivers will remain in effect until conditions improve, in order to protect the park’s native and wild trout fisheries.
Yellowstone National Park staff will continue to monitor the water temperatures and may lift the closures or implement additional restrictions and closures depending on the condition assessments. Anglers are advised to fish during the coolest times of day, land fish quickly, and handle them gently in the water to protect the park’s fisheries.
