Mobile, Ala. — On Wednesday morning, the fairways of Robert Trent Jones Magnolia Grove were filled with the sounds of swinging clubs and the spirit of service as golfers competed in the Yellowhammer Veterans Cup Classic. The event, organized by Vets Recover, is a fundraiser for the organization’s Veterans Endowment Fund, which provides uncompensated medical care and treatment programs for veterans in need.
Purpose of the tournament
John Kilpatrick, executive director of Vets Recover, explained that the tournament and the endowment fund were created specifically to cover the cost of care that the nonprofit cannot bill to the VA or private insurers. “Every dime raised goes directly to help veterans at Vets Recover,” Kilpatrick said. “It’s pretty awesome.”
Impact on veterans
The fund’s mission is to ensure that financial hardship does not keep veterans from receiving the treatment they deserve. Kilpatrick noted that Vets Recover’s treatment center, located at 1200 Spring Hill Avenue in Midtown Mobile, delivered more than $3 million in uncompensated care last year. Even though the organization now participates in the VA Community Care Network and receives some reimbursement, there remain veterans who do not qualify for VA benefits or lack health insurance.
Community involvement
The tournament draws local business leaders, civic volunteers, and golf enthusiasts who share a commitment to supporting those who have served. Organizers highlighted that the event not only raises money but also raises awareness of the ongoing needs of Mobile’s veteran population. By combining sport with service, the Classic reinforces the city’s tradition of honoring its military families.
Looking ahead
Vets Recover plans to expand the endowment fund’s reach in the coming years, aiming to increase the amount of uncompensated care available to veterans across the region. The organization encourages community members to attend future events, donate directly, or volunteer at the treatment center.
