Andover Township, N.J. – Yale University senior goalkeeper Kyla Holmes is proving that dedication to both sport and community can go hand‑in‑hand. While defending the net for the Yale women’s soccer team and pursuing a biomedical engineering degree, Holmes also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Andover Township Volunteer Fire Department.
From the soccer field to the firehouse
Holmes, a native of New Jersey, has been kicking a soccer ball since she was five years old. “I’ve always loved the rush of competition,” she says, “and firefighting gives me that same heartbeat‑pounding excitement off the field.” Growing up watching her father, a longtime volunteer firefighter, she dreamed of joining the department herself. “I was itching for the day I was old enough to put on the gear,” she recalls.
Balancing a rigorous academic schedule, varsity athletics, and firehouse duties is demanding, but Holmes says the support network around her makes it manageable. “I’m very passionate about academics, soccer, and firefighting. It’s busy, obviously, but I don’t find it difficult to balance,” she explains.

Yale defender Alex Chang, who has known Holmes since her high‑school visit to campus, praises her commitment. “She’s very, very involved in it. It definitely requires a lot of bravery, which I always respect her for,” Chang says. “She’s brave on the field as a keeper, and it’s really cool what she can do off the field.”
Holmes views both roles as extensions of the same mission: protecting and helping others. “Being able to help people feels really good, and it satisfies my adrenaline craving. It’s the best of both worlds,” she notes.

Looking ahead, Holmes hopes to continue volunteering with the fire department while pursuing a career as a trauma surgeon. Her blend of athletic discipline, engineering insight, and frontline emergency experience positions her uniquely for a future in high‑stakes medical care.
