Xi Jinping calls for “indomitable fighting spirit” and praises Tiananmen crackdown

Chinese President Xi Jinping used a high‑profile address on Monday to call for an “indomitable fighting spirit” as the nation confronts what he described as “rough seas” and “raging storms.” The speech, delivered at the Great Hall of the People, also praised the Communist Party’s decision to crush the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests.

Speech tied to Jiang Zemin’s birth centenary

The remarks were part of a commemorative event marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of former leader Jiang Zemin, who headed China from 1993 to 2002. Thousands of officials and delegates gathered for the ceremony, and all seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee were present, underscoring the speech’s significance.

Historical context and Xi’s framing

Xi referenced the 1989 political upheaval, noting that Jiang Zemin “resolutely supported and implemented the Central Committee’s correct decisions, effectively maintaining stability in Shanghai.” He framed the Party’s decision to use troops and tanks to clear Tiananmen Square as a necessary action that preserved national stability.

The protests began in April after the death of former Party leader Hu Yaobang, a figure many saw as a reformist. Students gathered to demand greater political openness, and the movement grew until the People’s Liberation Army moved in on June 4, resulting in a violent crackdown.

Economic achievements and future outlook

While praising the crackdown, Xi also highlighted China’s economic progress since the 1990s, noting the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001 with U.S. support and the subsequent period of rapid growth. He claimed that “people’s lives continue to improve,” even as recent data shows a slowdown in growth.

Xi concluded by asserting that the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” remains bright and that the long‑term dream of national resurgence is becoming a reality.

Implications for U.S.–China relations

The speech comes amid strained U.S.–China ties, with recent trade disputes and geopolitical competition. Xi’s second meeting with former President Donald Trump is slated for late September, where trade, artificial intelligence, and Taiwan are expected to be discussed.

State media broadcast the full address, and Chinese officials emphasized the importance of defending national sovereignty, security, and development interests. The speech reinforces the Party’s narrative that strong, centralized leadership and a willingness to confront challenges are essential to China’s continued rise.
