Wyoming’s Hummingbirds Begin Seasonal Migration South to Mexico

Wyoming’s spring and summer skies are dotted with hummingbirds, but as days grow shorter the tiny birds embark on an epic migration to warmer climes. According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, three hummingbird species are confirmed breeders in the state, with a fourth suspected and several others merely passing through.

Breeding Species in Wyoming

The most common breeder is the broad‑tailed hummingbird, followed by the rufous hummingbird and the calliope hummingbird. The black‑chinned hummingbird is suspected of breeding, while the Anna’s hummingbird and ruby‑throated hummingbird have no confirmed breeding records. The Rivoli’s hummingbird has been spotted but is not considered a regular breeder.

Timing of the Journey

When summer begins to fade, adult male hummingbirds are the first to head south, followed by females. The youngest birds remain a bit longer, typically departing between September and mid‑October. Hummingbird Central notes that these birds average about 23 miles per day, using tailwinds to cover the distance quickly. The total journey can span up to 1,500 miles, taking several weeks to reach wintering grounds in the Southern United States or Mexico.

What Residents Should Know

Many Wyoming residents wonder whether keeping feeders out longer will extend the hummingbirds’ stay. The answer is no; the birds’ internal clock and shortening daylight trigger their migration regardless of food availability. In fact, leaving feeders out too late can create problems. Wyoming is bear country, and unattended feeders attract bears looking to bulk up for winter, creating safety concerns for both wildlife and people.

For those who wish to enjoy hummingbirds in future seasons, the best practice is to remove feeders as autumn approaches and reinstall them in spring when the birds return. This helps protect both the hummingbirds and local wildlife.

Why the Migration Matters

The hummingbird migration is a reminder of Wyoming’s unique role in North‑American wildlife patterns. By providing breeding habitat, the state supports species that travel vast distances, linking ecosystems from the Rocky Mountains to the deserts of Mexico. Observing these tiny travelers offers families and nature enthusiasts a chance to connect with the natural world and appreciate the rhythms of creation.
