Erik Sandvik, the junior kicker for the Wyoming Cowboys football team, has been working to refine his technique after a tough end to last season. Sandvik made five of his first six field-goal attempts but then connected on just one of his last five tries.
Improving Mental Game
Sandvik attributes his struggles to getting in his own head and worrying about every little detail of his kick. He has been working with former NFL All-Pro kicker John Carney to improve his mental game and technique. Sandvik spent a week with Carney over the summer and has been practicing new breathing techniques to help him stay focused.
Sandvik has also been working on his physical technique, making adjustments to his steps to generate more power from his hips. He says the changes have already shown results, including a 57-yard field goal in a recent practice.
Coach’s Confidence
Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel has expressed confidence in Sandvik’s abilities, saying that he has been impressed with the kicker’s progress. Sawvel has also emphasized the importance of Sandvik’s kickoffs, saying that he wants the ball to be in the end zone more often to prevent returns.
