A Carbon County Sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times during a traffic stop on June 8. The suspect, who has not been named, had stockpiled hundreds of semi-automatic rifle magazines in his apartment and planned a large-scale act of violence, according to Sheriff Alex Bakken.
Investigation Ongoing
The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The suspect was killed in a shootout with deputies after setting fire to a nearby apartment building and fleeing the scene.
CCSO Sgt. Zach Burns, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2015, remains in critical condition after suffering wounds to his neck, arm, and hip. Sheriff Bakken praised Burns for his bravery, saying he ‘saved the lives of countless first responders and community members’ by confronting the suspect.
The community has rallied around the sheriff’s office, with residents and law enforcement from surrounding jurisdictions offering support. Sheriff Bakken expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, saying it has been critical for the wellbeing of his staff, first responders, and the community as a whole.
