Wyoming Cowboys welcome top quarterback recruit Michael Vander Luitgaren after standout debut

Laramie – The University of Wyoming football program added a high‑profile quarterback to its 2026 recruiting class after the Illinois native posted a career‑night performance in his high‑school season opener. Michael Vander Luitgaren completed 28 of 35 passes for 439 yards and five touchdowns, leading Batavia High School to a 49‑35 win over Maine South.

Vander Luitgaren, a three‑star prospect standing 6‑foot‑1 and weighing 200 pounds, committed to the Cowboys in mid‑May, turning down official offers from ten other programs, including Mountain West rival North Dakota State and several MAC and Ivy League schools. The recruit previously threw for more than 2,700 yards and 31 touchdowns last season.

Coaches and analysts weigh in

Batavia head coach Dennis Piron, who praised Vander Luitgaren’s talent, told Chicago Sun Times reporter Michael O’Brien that the quarterback is “severely underrated” despite a strong class of QBs statewide. Piron added, “We also have dudes that can go get it and catch the ball.”

According to recruiting site 247Sports, Vander Luitgaren ranks as the sixth‑best quarterback in Wyoming, behind players such as Israel Abrams, Jake Nawrot, Jameson Purcell, Jackie Ryder and Ben Peterson.

Player perspective

When asked about his debut, Vander Luitgaren said, “I’m coming into the season with a big chip on my shoulder. Not trying to diss on the other guys – they are amazing players – but I got disrespected a little bit. Today I showed why I should be considered a top quarterback in the state.”

Tight end recruitment continues

Alongside Vander Luitgaren, the Cowboys also pursued tight end prospect Thomas Prescott, a 6‑foot‑4, 225‑pound senior who recorded 19 catches for 373 yards and five touchdowns last season. Although Prescott carries no recruiting stars, he received 14 offers, four from Mountain West programs: Air Force, New Mexico, Northern Illinois and Wyoming.

Future class outlook

Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel reported that the 2027 class already has 16 verbal commits, with eight players expressing interest in graduating early to join spring football. Vander Luitgaren will join fellow quarterback Tucker Ingersoll, a product of Arvada, Colorado, in the Cowboys’ depth chart. Other potential contributors include Mason Drube, Landon Sims, Tyler Franklin and Taylor Hasselbeck.

The early national signing period opens on Dec. 4, with the traditional signing day set for Feb. 5.

Local impact

The addition of a high‑performing quarterback and a promising tight end underscores Wyoming’s commitment to building a competitive offense rooted in local talent. Fans in Laramie and across the state can look forward to a season that may see the Cowboys contend more strongly within the Mountain West Conference.
