Wyoming Boaters Urged to Prioritize Safety This Memorial Day

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) and Wyoming State Parks (WSP) are urging boaters to prioritize safety while enjoying the state’s waterways. This reminder comes as many families plan to spend time on the water, taking advantage of the holiday to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Wyoming.

Essential Safety Measures

According to WGFD and WSP, all watercraft, including motorized boats, paddle boards, and kayaks, must have enough life jackets for every person on board. These personal flotation devices (PFDs) should be appropriately sized and easily accessible. It’s mandatory for children aged 12 and under to wear life jackets whenever a vessel is in motion.

Aaron Kerr, Game and Fish law enforcement coordinator, emphasized the importance of life jackets in a past statement, noting, “We want all boaters to safely enjoy Wyoming’s waters. We can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have a life jacket for all of the passengers in your watercraft. It is the law and life jackets are proven to save lives.”

Additional Equipment Requirements

Beyond life jackets, motorized boaters must ensure they have the required safety equipment on board. This includes at least one throwable flotation device, such as a ring buoy or float cushion, for boats 16 feet or longer. A proper fire extinguisher is necessary for any boat with an inboard engine, a permanently installed fuel tank, a closed living space, or compartments that store fuel tanks or other combustible materials.

Boaters are also reminded to use navigation lights when operating between sunset and sunrise and to have a white light visible from 360 degrees around the boat when underway. Operators of motorized boats must be at least 16 years old, and boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.

Park-Specific Regulations

For those planning excursions in national parks, it’s crucial to check specific rules and regulations, as they can vary. For instance, Grand Teton National Park requires adherence to aquatic invasive species inspection requirements, while Yellowstone National Park has its own set of guidelines.

By following these safety precautions, boaters can ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend on Wyoming’s beautiful waters.
