Wynn Resorts worker files NLRB complaint alleging intimidation over union support

Colleen Donahue, a veteran pool operator at Wynn Las Vegas, filed a formal complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) this week, alleging that the resort’s employee‑relations representative engaged in surveillance‑like behavior and interrogated her about her support for unionization.

Details of the complaint

According to a press release from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 501, Donahue says an employee‑relations representative gave the impression of monitoring her conversations with coworkers and repeatedly questioned her about her union activities. She told the union that, “If they cared about us like they tell us they do, they would let the employees make their own choices.” Donahue, who plans to retire next week, added that she wants to protect her colleagues who remain at the resort.

Union involvement

Local 501 organizer Karina Ochoa confirmed that the union helped Donahue prepare and submit the complaint, noting that the union knows how to word filings and navigate the NLRB process. Ochoa said, “We know how to submit the complaints, how to word them, how to communicate with the board agent.” She also reported that after a local news story aired, additional workers began coming forward with similar experiences.

Previous allegations

Channel 13 previously reported that two former Wynn employees, Napco Sharma and Randall Crank, claimed they were terminated for supporting unionization in September. Wynn Resorts responded at the time, stating those claims were unsubstantiated. The resort reiterated its position in a statement to KTNV regarding Donahue’s new filing, saying, “We vehemently deny these allegations. They are unsubstantiated, and we are confident that a review of the facts will show they are without merit.”

Context for Nevada labor climate

Nevada’s hospitality sector has seen a rise in union activity in recent years, with workers seeking better wages, benefits, and workplace protections. While the state does not have a statewide minimum wage higher than the federal level, many casino operators have faced pressure to address employee concerns through collective bargaining.

What comes next?

The NLRB will review Donahue’s filing to determine whether it has merit and whether a formal investigation is warranted. If the board finds sufficient cause, it could order Wynn Resorts to cease any alleged unlawful conduct and potentially require remedial actions.

Community response

Local labor advocates have praised Donahue’s decision to speak out, emphasizing the importance of protecting workers’ rights to organize. “When employees feel safe to voice concerns, it strengthens the entire community,” said a spokesperson for Local 501. Wynn Resorts, a major employer in the Las Vegas tourism economy, has not indicated any changes to its employee‑relations policies pending the NLRB’s review.
