Wyndham Clark is currently leading the U.S. Open after a strong first round. Clark, who won the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club three years ago, started on No. 10 and opened with two quick birdies. He went out in 32 to get his name atop the leaderboard.
Challenging Conditions
The USGA set up a different golf course at Shinnecock Hills, with slower and more receptive greens, to keep it playable in strong wind. However, when the wind subsided late in the day, Clark took advantage and made several birdies and an eagle to take the lead.
Clark was not the only one to have a strong round, as several other players, including Oklahoma junior Ryder Cowan and Dustin Johnson, also had good performances. Johnson, who is in his final year of being exempt from the U.S. Open, ran off four straight birdies but failed to get up-and-down for birdie on the easy par-5 fifth and then three-putted for double bogey on the sixth to fall four shots behind.
Leaderboard
Clark led by four over seven players, including Cowan and Johnson. Four of the players behind Clark are former U.S. Open champions, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Gary Woodland, and Jon Rahm. The leaderboard is still fluid, with many players still having holes to play.
