Wylie East continued its strong start to the 9-6A volleyball season with a decisive 3-0 victory over Lakeview Centennial on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Raiders, led by sophomore Tess Adamic, closed the match with set scores of 25-10, 25-21 and 26-24, improving to 9-1 in district play and positioning themselves for a pivotal Friday clash against the unbeaten Pirates (10-0).
Match highlights
The Raiders opened the first set with a blistering 9-2 lead, thanks to early kills from Macy Barcelo and an ace that set the tone. Lakeview Centennial fought back, but Wylie East’s balanced attack—featuring kills from Adamic, Williams, and Demia Williams—kept the Patriots at bay. Barcelo capped the set with a fourth kill to seal a 25-10 win.
The second set proved more competitive. Lakeview briefly took a 5-3 lead and later stretched the advantage to 13-10. However, Wylie East responded with an ace from Sadie Green‑Sustaire and timely kills from Barcelo and Williams, regaining the lead at 15-14. A surge of points from Caroline Talbert, Barcelo and an ace by Audrey Cravens pushed the Raiders to a 24-18 set point, and a final error by Lakeview handed Wylie East a 25-21 victory.
The deciding set was a nail‑biter. Lakeview rallied with kills from Sydney Williams, Jayla Green and two aces from Taylor Westley to tie the score at 9-9. The Patriots briefly surged to an 18-14 lead, but Wylie East chipped away with points from Zoey Williams and Viky Vazquez. A crucial kill by Kaitlyn Shoumbert gave Lakeview a 22-16 edge, yet the Raiders answered with a 10-2 run to close the set. Adamic delivered four kills in the stretch, including the match‑point kill that put the Raiders ahead 23-22. After a tied finish at 24-24, Adamic’s subsequent kill and a Patriot error sealed the 26-24 set and the sweep.
Looking ahead
With the victory, Wylie East now sits at the top of the district standings alongside the Pirates. Friday’s rematch will be the first meeting of the season between the two unbeaten squads, offering the Raiders a chance to avenge a four‑set loss earlier in the year and potentially force a tie for the district lead.
Lakeview Centennial, now 4-6, remains in a four‑team battle for the final playoff spot. A win over a higher‑tier opponent could provide a much‑needed boost as the regular season winds down.
Coach and community supporters praised the Raiders’ resilience and depth, noting that the team’s ability to execute under pressure reflects the strong work ethic and family values emphasized in the Wylie school system. Fans are encouraged to attend Friday’s showdown at the Wylie High School gym to support the Raiders as they chase another district victory.
