MESQUITE — The Wylie East Lady Raiders secured a 2-0 victory over Longview to capture the Region II-6A Division II Bi-District Championship, using a strong defensive performance and timely second-half goals to advance in the playoffs.

The opening half was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to generate quality scoring chances. Through the first 25 minutes, neither side found much rhythm offensively as defensive pressure and physical play dictated the tempo.

Wylie East nearly broke through midway through the half when Sophie Preston fired a shot from the top of the box around the 24-minute mark, but Longview’s goalkeeper came up with a key save to keep the match scoreless. Izzy Alarcon-Vo followed with another opportunity near the 20-minute mark, just missing wide right.

Despite controlling possession for much of the half, Wylie East was unable to capitalize. A dangerous free kick was denied, and multiple corner kick opportunities, including close chances around the 6-minute and 4-minute marks were cleared away by Longview’s defense.

The teams went into halftime tied 0-0.

“It was definitely a tough, physical match,” Wylie East head coach Kody Christensen said. “I think our girls stayed composed and continued to create opportunities throughout the game.”

Longview showed more possession early in the second half, but Wylie East’s defense held firm, limiting any real scoring threats and forcing key turnovers.

The breakthrough came at the 26:11 mark, when Nikki Coleman connected on a corner kick to give Wylie East a 1-0 lead.

“That was a huge goal for us,” Christensen said. “I think that was the ultimate momentum shift right there.”

Wylie East continued to build momentum, and at the 20:10 mark, Preston delivered with a goal off a key scoring opportunity to extend the lead to 2-0.

“Sophie has been consistent for us all season,” Christensen said. “She works incredibly hard and puts herself in the right position to finish strong.”

The Raiders continued to apply pressure late, creating additional scoring chances, including a pair of shots that struck the right post, but were unable to add to their lead.

Defensively, Wylie East remained disciplined throughout, shutting out Longview and preventing any serious comeback attempt.

“I’m really proud of our girls tonight,” Christensen said. “From our defense to our back line, to our midfield, everyone did their job and stayed locked in.”

With the win, Wylie East advances in the postseason and claims the Region II-6A Division II Bi-District Championship.

The Lady Raiders will play Mesquite Horn for the second year in a row. The rematch will take place Tuesday at North Forney High School. Wylie East dominated Horn 8-0 last season.
